Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke with the media for about five minutes following Thursday's practice. Here are the highlights.

Green Bay Packers defensive end Datone Jones, left, leaves the field after injuring an ankle during the second quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field on Oct. 2.

On Datone Jones not practicing:

Datone did not practice today. He's not recovering as fast as we thought. He made some progress Friday for Saturday, but it's not coming along. He was just testing it out yesterday.

On Cam Newton:

He's a big-time player. He's obviously the focal point of their offense. He can do things running the football and passing it through the air. Very talented.

On Tramon Williams and Sam Shields:

They're getting better. Didn't get any updates today. Tramon is still further ahead of Sam.

On Bouncing back from Miami heat:

They're fine. They had a chance to bounce back Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, they just had the helmet on. Our padded work was what it needed to be. I'm actually excited to watch the tape.

On Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin:

He's big, physical, goes up for the football. He looks to be a favorite target for Cam Newton. He's got big-time ability. Big catch radius.

On Panthers TE Greg Olsen:

I think Greg is playing excellent. I don't know what his numbers are, but we've always had a lot of success for him going back to Chicago. He's having a heck of a year.

On working Jarrett Boykin back in:

I don't think so. I thought yesterday he needed to go through the practice to kind of get through. He did a bunch of stuff today. How he goes through the evaluation tomorrow will probably be a pretty good indicator.

On Demetri Goodson's readiness:

We've got 63 guys in the building we're counting on. Demetri will jump in in a heartbeat if he needs to go.
