Bostick announces his release from Packers

Brandon Bostick's time in Green Bay lasted 29 days after his failed attempt to secure an onside kick opened the door to a shocking defeat at Seattle in the NFC championship game.

The Packers' third-string tight end announced Monday afternoon over Twitter that he had been released after spending his first three seasons with the team. Bostick came to Green Bay in 2012 as an undrafted free agent from Newberry College, a Division II program in South Carolina. He spent the 2012 season on the practice squad.

Bostick had one year and $585,000 left on his contract, money the Packers won't owe.

Bostick's release leaves the Packers with three tight ends: Richard Rodgers, Andrew Quarless and Justin Perillo. Tight end is expected to be a significant positional need entering this year's NFL draft.

A 6-foot-3 wide receiver in college, Bostick was signed with the hope he would develop as a threat in the Packers' passing game. He appeared to establish himself as Green Bay's starting tight end during training camp this August, but a slight fracture of the fibula in his right knee forced him to miss the start of the season.

The fractured fibula forced Bostick to miss only the season opener and two preseason games, but he never regained his spot on the depth chart. He missed two more games with a hip injury in November, highlighting a consistent struggle to stay healthy.

Bostick missed four games with injuries in 2013.

In two seasons, Bostick finished with nine catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns.

Perhaps the injuries wouldn't have warranted his early release. But following Bostick's botched onside kick recovery attempt late in the NFL title game, his departure seemed inevitable.
