Murphy: Offseason player arrests 'very disappointing'

The Green Bay Packers went more than three years without a single player arrest, but this offseason has been tumultuous.

It started when defensive end Datone Jones received a marijuana citation hours after the Packers' plan returned to Green Bay from Seattle, site of their NFC title game loss to the Seahawks. In February, fellow defensive lineman Letroy Guion had a drug arrest in Starke, Fla.

Then, early on the Fourth of July in Miami Beach, Fla., tight end Andrew Quarless arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in public.

Packers president Mark Murphy and general manager Ted Thompson did not address the team's off-field issues with shareholders Tuesday. Murphy did reference the league's recent issues with domestic violence.

After the team's annual meeting, Murphy was asked about his own players' run-ins with law enforcement.

"It's obviously very disappointing," Murphy said. "Ted and I, and everybody associated with the Packers, is disappointed. I think our fans are, but that being said there's a process going forward with all those players. Some are still continuing. I guess others, there's an appeal in place."

Jones was suspended for the opener, and Guion is appealing a three-game suspension the NFL handed him for his arrest. The league has yet to levy a punishment against Quarless, though that could change.

As difficult as the offseason has been for the Packers, Murphy said Thompson has a solid reputation of bringing the right players into the organization.

"I've been in meetings with Ted," Murphy said. "Character is key for him. So I think as you step back and look over the long run, I think they've really done an outstanding job of bringing in quality people."
