Abbrederis suffered concussion in Thursday's practice

Jared Abbrederis’ early departure from the team’s first training camp practice Thursday was unrelated to the ACL injury that cost him all of his rookie season. But it was potentially worse for the second-year receiver out of Wisconsin.

Abbrederis, a fifth-round pick last season, suffered a concussion following an interception in team drills, McCarthy said Friday. It’s unknown how long he will be out of practice.

“He’s going through the protocol,” McCarthy said.

Abbrederis’ concussion was especially concerning because of his injury history. He had at least two prior concussions with the Badgers in 2012 and 2013, and repeated concussions are generally more troubling for a player. He also missed all of 2014 after tearing his ACL in training camp last August. Abbrederis also tore his ACL in a devastating collision during his time at Wisconsin.

Lost practice reps also could be costly for Abbrederis, who is competing for a roster spot among a deep group of receivers.

Cobb said he was initially surprised of the injury’s severity.

“I didn’t realize how hard he had hit his head until we saw it on film,” Cobb said. “But, yeah, that’s tough. You’ve got a guy like him that, he could be a great player. He’s got the opportunity but he’s had a couple things come up here in the past couple training camps. I’m just hoping he gets healthy and can get back out there.”
