McCarthy: Abbrederis 'taking more steps'
Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media before Wednesday's practice. Here are some highlights:
On Jared Abbrederis being at practice:
Yeah, he's getting better. Medical staff feels like he's taking more steps. As far as being out on the field, it's just another example in the protocol.
On what he's able to do:
There's different steps. That's one of them.
On Randall Cobb:
I think it's very important for everybody. Randall, the coaches to stay focused on what we need to do. That's not trying to put pressure on any individual to try to do more. Every player on offense has a distinct role. We have things we feel that they do best and we'll stay the course in developing it. We all understand the type of player Jordy is, but we're not going to ask any of our receivers or any of our offensive players to try to go out and replace Jordy Nelson.
On Aaron Rodgers playing final two preseason games:
Any decision that's made is done with risk assessment. Every decision that's been made so far.
On possibly being without three starting linemen:
All the injuries do. We'll practice today. We have things we have to get done today. We'll come in tomorrow and have the medical staff look at everybody.
On if Rodgers wouldn't play:
I don't know why we're even talking about it. We'll take a look at practice.
On JC Tretter:
JC is a young man who can play multiple positions. I think he's playing very well at center. He'll be prepared to play at guard and tackle. The more you can do affects how we play the 46-man roster on Sundays.
On young receivers working with starters:
It's about production and consistency and how they fit into the football team. I think every young player who's fighting for a spot, it's through special teams. This is not a wide open competition because of Jordy's condition.
On Ty Montgomery working inside/outside:
He has ability to play inside or outside. No question abouot it. It's getting reps out there and the timing with the quarterback. It's really reps, but he's fully capable of it.
On David Bakhtiari:
I'm hoping he goes today. We'll see.
On Datone Jones' knee:
Am I concerned? I wouldn't say it's major. I don't see him playing this week.
On Scott Tolzien's progression:
I think he needs to play again this preseason. He's played a lot of football, but this is the time of year he needs to play as much as he can.
On Blanchard/Hundley opportunity:
This is going to be a big night for both of those guys. The fact they'll be able to play in all three games, I don't know if I've seen anyone do that. I think Matt and Brett will have a lot of reps.
