Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media on Thursday morning ahead of practice for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers at Lambeau Field. Here are some highlights:

On putting safety Sean Richardson on injured reserve:

Obviously, it’s not easy. Anytime you’re season comes to an end, that’s a tough reality. Really the opportunities he’s created for himself and the position he’s in our football team.  You don’t have enough Sean Richardsons on a football team. We’re still working through some things. He’s a strong man. I know there’s a lot of love for him in this building. We’ll make the transition.

On whether Richardson's neck injury will end his career:

He’s still working through the process.

On injured linebacker Nick Perry:

He’s advancing through the process better than expected and so is (defensive tackle) B.J. Raji. Those guys are making progress.

On secondary without injured safety Morgan Burnett:

Secondary has played very well. Obviously, Morgan is one of our better players and key communicators. Ha Ha (Clinton-Dix) has been big. So has Micah (Hyde) and Chris Banjo. What else can I say about Sam Shields? He’s playing at the highest level of his career. … Guys are on the same page. It’s fun to hear the interaction with the defense. Gives them more confidence this week.

On the San Diego Chargers' passing game:

It’s definitely a very matchup conscious and sophisticated in Phillip Rivers to get to the schemes they want to at the right time. When you watch Phillip Rivers play and Aaron Rodgers play, the ability to control at the line of scrimmage.

On injured wide receiver Davante Adams’ practice participation:

I expect Davante and Morgan to do more today.

On tight end Justin Perillo, just promoted to the roster:

Justin, very familiar with our offense. I look at Justin as a two-year player and now he gets his opportunity. Steady smart, instinctive. He’s definitely a valuable guy. He can play all the positions at special teams and all the positions at tight end.

On practicing in pads on Thursday:

Really, I’ve been trying to take care of them on Wednesdays. The Wednesday practice has been the same the last three weeks. We did a little more yesterday. We’ll go pads today. We’ll pad them up and get through all the heavy stuff and then back off.
