Green Bay Pckers running back James Starks (44) returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out with a hip injury earlier in the week.

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks was back in pads for Thursday’s practice at Clarke Hinkle Field.

He stayed in Green Bay during the bye week to get treatment for a hip injury he sustained in the Packers' 27-20 win over San Diego on Oct. 18. Packers coach Mike McCarthy was optimistic before Thursday’s practice he might be able to do more after sitting out practice on Monday and Wednesday.

The sixth-year running back appeared to be limited during the individual periods that were open to the media. He’s coming off a career performance against the Chargers, rushing for 112 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving).

“James Starks, work was good (Wednesday),” McCarthy said before practice. “I know he felt good at the end of the day, so the plan is to get him to do more today. We’ll see how the pre-practice goes.”

Meanwhile, cornerback Damarious Randall joined receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) as the only players not practicing Thursday. It's uncertain what ails Randall, who didn’t appear on Wednesday's injury report. Randall missed two practices and the preseason opener against New England with a groin strain during training camp.

McCarthy said before practice he plans to give Montgomery the entire week before determining his availability for Sunday night’s game against Denver. He sprained an ankle in the second quarter against the Chargers and didn’t return.

“Hopeful he can do more today,” McCarthy said before practice. “That’s the process. I don’t have an expectation now. We’ll give him until Saturday and see if he can work Saturday. That’s kind of timeline that I’m putting him on, so we’ll give him every chance to get back.”

Receiver Davante Adams (ankle), defensive tackle B.J. Raji (groin), outside linebacker Nick Perry (shoulder) and safety Morgan Burnett (calf) continued to practice after being limited on Wednesday. and follow him on Twitter @WesHod.
