Frustrated Montgomery out for Sunday
The frustration is starting to set in for Ty Montgomery.
The Green Bay Packers rookie receiver has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders after aggravating his lingering high-ankle sprain this week in practice. It’ll be the eighth consecutive game Montgomery has missed.
With tight end Andrew Quarless close to returning from temporary injured reserve, the Packers may need to consider shutting down Montgomery for the remainder of the season. It's what they did in 2013 when cornerback Casey Hayward was dealing with a recurring hamstring injury.
Montgomery caught 15 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the Packers’ first six games before injuring the ankle in a 27-20 win over San Diego on Oct. 18. He returned to practice three weeks later only to aggravate it again during a padded workout on Nov. 19.
It looked like he finally cleared a hurdle when he returned to practice last week, but said it didn’t feel right during Wednesday's workout. In the locker room on Friday, Montgomery admitted the whole situation has been "very frustrating" and that “I just can’t play football like myself right now.”
Asked if he’s scheduled to undergo more tests, Montgomery said: I’m still waiting to find out. We’re getting ready to play Oakland, so I’m just waiting to find out. I’m kind of fed up with the process.”
The Packers also ruled out cornerback Sam Shields (concussion) for Sunday’s game. Receiver Davante Adams (foot), right guard T.J. Lang (shoulder/ankle), center Corey Linsley (ankle) and defensive lineman Mike Daniels (hamstring) are questionable. All four were estimated as limited participants on Friday.
They Packers would be down to four receivers if Adams can't go - Randall Cobb, James Jones, Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis - unless they activate Ed Williams off the practice squad. The former Fort Hays State standout has been with the team since August.
Adams and Lang's ankle injury were new developments following Thursday's practice. Coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday morning that the team was still collecting information on Adams, who missed three games earlier this season with a sprained ankle.
Left guard Josh Sitton (back) was listed as limited Friday and probable to play despite sitting out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He said earlier this week that McCarthy and offensive line coach James Campen are in tune with what the eighth-year lineman needs to be ready for Sunday.
“I think I’m at the point where I know what I need and what I don’t need,” said Sitton earlier this week. “I think we all know what my plan is going into the year and moving forward week-in and week-out, and we seem to execute it pretty well. It’s nice to have coaches like that who’ll let you do that.”
Left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee), right tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee), outside linebacker Nick Perry (shoulder), linebacker Clay Matthews (ankle) and cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring) are also probable. Everyone except for Hayward (full participant) was estimated as limited Friday.
