Packers sign DE Ray Drew

Well, the Green Bay Packers finally have brought in a free agent.

The Packers announced on Monday the signing of Ray Drew, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive lineman who split last season between Miami and Cleveland’s practice squads. Since he wasn’t an unrestricted free agent, Drew doesn’t count against the compensatory equation.

A four-year letterman at Georgia, Drew finished his collegiate career with 113 tackles, 7 ½ sacks and 36 quarterback pressures in 46 games (18 starts). Coincidentally, he also tied for the NCAA lead with three blocked kicks as a senior.

Drew, 23, signed as an undrafted free agent with Miami in May. He had three tackles in three preseason games before being released on Aug. 30. Drew later signed to Cleveland’s practice squad on Oct. 6 and spent the next four weeks with the Browns before being released.

The Packers have a growing need on the defensive line with Mike Pennel suspended for the first four games next season and B.J. Raji announcing on Monday that he won’t play in 2016.
