Jensen Beach's Jamien Sherwood selected by Jets in fifth round of 2021 NFL Draft
Jensen Beach alum and Auburn product Jamien Sherwood was selected by New York Jets with the second pick in the fifth round (146 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft on Saturday, becoming the first local product chosen since Martin County alum and current Denver Broncos star Justin Simmons back in 2016.
Sherwood had a standout career from the start at Jensen Beach, starting as a freshman, earning first-team All-Area honors three times and was selected as TCPalm's Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 as a junior.
Choosing to play in the SEC at Auburn, Sherwood worked his way up the depth chart and started every game as a junior this past season as the safety totaled 75 tackles in 11 games before declaring for the NFL Draft in January.
ESPN's pre-draft analysis said: "Sherwood is a big, strong safety who spent a high percentage of snaps inside the box or working as the overhang covering flexed-out tight ends. He's an above-average run defender with good strength and long arms. He's physical, and his length is an asset in coverage, but he has just marginal top-end speed."
Sherwood joins second overall draft pick Zach Wilson of BYU as members of the Jets. New York finished 2-14 last season and has not had a winning season since going 10-6 in 2015.
